If you’re planning on attending your local Renaissance Faire, you’ll need more than just a killer medieval costume. A few supplies will go a long way toward helping you have a fun, stress-free time. Here’s what to bring to the Renaissance Faire to get the most out of your day of time travel:
Stay Comfortable
As with any big outdoor festival, attending the Renaissance Faire will involve A TON of walking (and a bit of standing in line). You’ll probably want to keep an insulated stainless steel water bottle on you to stay hydrated–especially if you’re planning on downing some mead and ale throughout the day. (Outside food and drinks aren’t permitted–shocking, we know–but a refillable container you can clip onto your purse or belt will make it more convenient to carry water with you.)
Young kiddos might need a stroller since there’s a lot of ground to cover. Check the Faire’s website or Yelp reviews before you head over to make sure the paths aren’t too rocky or muddy.
It’s also a good idea to bring a picnic blanket in case you want to sit on the grass to watch the jousting match or human chess, or if you need a spot to eat lunch but all the picnic tables are full. Eating turkey legs outdoors can get messy, so some wet wipes for your hands probably wouldn’t go amiss.
Prepare for the Weather
You’re definitely going to want some sunscreen–or an umbrella if the weather calls for rain. There are quite a few trees around the fairground to stand under if you do get caught in a downpour, but you’ll still want to have an umbrella or poncho if the weather takes a turn for the worse. Late summer and early fall are notorious for changeable weather, so it’s best to dress in layers and be prepared for whatever the gods decree.
Speaking of rain, things will get muddy very quickly if you get some, so be sure to wear some water-resistant boots or sneakers you don’t mind scraping mud off of later. Even if it stays dry, the fairground is very dusty, so this probably isn’t the time to wear sandals.
A hat is also a good idea if you plan to be out in the sun all day–look for a straw bonnet or wide brimmed hat that would match your medieval aesthetic if you plan on dressing up. A pocket fan would be handy if it’s going to be unseasonably hot–especially if you’re on any medication that causes heat intolerance.
Don't Forget Wallet Essentials
Most Renaissance Faires are cash only when it comes to refreshments, so be sure to have enough on you to get snacks and drinks (and ale, of course). I.D. is required to purchase alcohol, so don’t forget your license or state identification card. They’ll probably give you a stamp or wristband to indicate that you’re over 21.
